What can we say? D-Link’s Sid the Spaceman was a law unto himself, along with Terrence the cat, his trustworthy side-kick.
We spent just under three years working with Sid. Our brief was to work up a character based on a sketch the agency supplied us, and work through various iterations until we hit a style that felt right. After two months or so, Sid as we know him was born, and he spent the next two years explaining to D-Link’s home users which product they might need and how to use it. His videos were translated into every European language, subtitles managed, and he was just a fun guy to hang out with!
The project consisted of character development in the early stages, with Sid initially rigged for simple poses for still shots. Eventually this extended to full animation and the rig was tightened up somewhat. Consistency of style was paramount, especially given the longevity of the project. Final media was everything from low resolution web to massive exhibition stand quality.
