Armrests v2
Crane Cab Simulator
The original arm rest design was specifically for use in the crane cab simulator. The next iteration needed to contain more electronic components in the units themselves, so they could be used in a standalone environment.
The Brief
The brief was to look at stealth technology. To create something angular that shied away from the typical black box solution.
We began fleshing ideas out in LightWave 3D – our go-to package for roughing 3D ideas up before committing to a CAD package.
The design also needed to be flexible, in that it could be used in various simulators. This entailed integrating a caddy system that could be removed quickly – the caddy containing all of the controls and control drives in one simple unit. The CAD image here shows the three alternative caddy faceplates.
The Design
The final armrests design integrated two separate bays to house control units. The front bay also had enough header space to house the caddy control unit.
The particularly challenging aspect of this project was the many angled components that needed to match up when assembled.
Installation
Here the armrests can be seen in a typical installation, complete with instrumentation and touch screen displays.
The projection screen housing was supplied by Design & Display Structures (D&D) in London.
